For 2010 what are the reflections worth noting – the accomplishments and the failures? There are a couple of things that I am working on to improve and simplify daily living.
Digital media database. If I look at all the books and music I purchased and consumed this year, where are they? What did I learn as a result? How can I organize them and later on, find them? And how can any organizational system help me browse them in the real world?
For music, I imagine that a 3×5 card file (4×6 or CD filing system) would work. The benefit of a physical system is that we have a backup too. This would then be located upstairs and downstairs for when I wanted to listen to music – I could browse the choices easily. An alternative would be a web based system where I could browse choices from any device anywhere. And it would be permanent.
Process to get this together. First, I need to locate all the music and written works that I have acquired and put them in one place. I would like to have a minimum of metadata so it is very easy to log stuff. I am thinking of a simple database with fields that consist of the following:
- Title, Author, Publisher, Date, Cost
- Date acquired, Read, Where Located
With the right reporting software I could also create a user friendly way to rediscover what I have. The question is how simple can this be?
Then we have the question of the reporting software (and cataloging too). Choices include:
Bento, Excel, Free Text, Wiki/HTML, Blog, Handwritten, Special Purpose Database software, Zoho, Microsoft live?
